Owners Dennis and Judy Groth established the winery, located at 750 Oakville Cross Road in Oakville, in 1982. Dennis is a CPA and was CFO of Atari before entering the winery business. The winemaker, since the 1994 vintage, is Michael Weis who has a Masters degree in Microbiology. He came from Vichon Winery and possesses 27 years of enology experience. Vineyard acres total 139 and production is 50,000 cases per year. The oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines date from 1972. Fifteen-hundred cases of Groth Reserve and 15, 000 of the estate Cabernet are produced annually. Groth is also known for its excellent Chardonnay (11,500 cases) and Sauvignon Blanc (20,000 cases). 1997 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 94-99 pts, C4N4?F4+A3T3+E4?: The present focus of this wine is its very sweet fruit and finish, undoubtedly due to high alcohol and intense fruit. The tannins are soft and silky. The underlying structure is present. Time will allow the wine to equilibrate and its components will harmonize. Once that occurs, this Cab will be a blockbuster! Aged in 100% new French oak. Tasted 1/29/99.
