THREE STELLAR 1982 RED BORDEAUX About five years ago I had the pleasure of tasting (and drinking) three outstanding 1982s at a dinner in San Francisco. They were the 1982 Margaux, Mouton, and Leoville Las Cases. I brought the 1982 Margaux. Although I lost my tasting notes from that evening (too much wine?), the results of the tasting are still firmly implanted in my memory and were rekindled by a recent tasting of 1982 Leoville Las Cases (notes below). The winner by a whisker was Margaux, with Mouton a very close second. The Leoville didn't have the concentration or complexity that the other two exhibited. Both Margaux and Mouton were lush, complex wines. My recent tasting of 1982 Leoville Las Cases confirms this memory, albeit, without the Margaux and Mouton present. Interestingly, the 1983 Margaux, which I've tasted several times from my cellar in the past 8 years, may eclipse the 1982 Margaux. Its a beauty exhibiting lush, multi-layered complexity. Of course, I prefer a blind tasting of these wines with the inclusion of Lafite and Latour, but most of the collectors I know prefer to drink these wines in a restaurant setting rather than a blind tasting event. 1982 Chateau Leoville Las Cases, 95 pts, C4+N5-F4-A3T3+E4: Exhibiting a deep, dense red color with no sign of browning, this 23 year old beauty is very alive and well. The nose is a combination of dirty gym socks and earthy, barny aromas. In the mouth, we have moderate concentration and complexity adding a subtle tannic bite in the finish. Should last 10+ years or longer if properly cellared (55F). Tasted 12-3-05. |
